What Is a Mortgage Escrow Account?

A mortgage escrow account is a separate account your lender manages alongside your loan, used to collect and hold funds for property taxes and homeowners insurance. Each month, a portion of your payment goes into this account instead of toward principal or interest. When the tax bill or insurance premium comes due, your servicer pays it directly from escrow.
